       Nigel grew up in Lesotho, previously named Basutoland, an enclaved country in Africa surrounded by the boundaries of the Republic of South Africa.
       He completed his high schooling at Kearsney College a Methodist private boarding school for boys at Botha's Hill, in the hills west of Durban, in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa, from which he graduated in 1968.
       He then enrolled in the civil engineering program at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in Durban, and earned a B.Sc.Eng in Civil Engineering in 1973. While working on his engineering degree, he also worked summers as a survey crew member, engineering student assistant, then as a survey party chief for Owen Jones and Partners, a civil engineering firm in the Durban area, and lastly as a technical assistant for a month at South African Railways.
