| Nigel grew up in Lesotho, previously named Basutoland, an enclaved country in Africa surrounded by the boundaries of the Republic of South Africa. | ||||
| He completed his high schooling at Kearsney College a Methodist private boarding school for boys at Botha's Hill, in the hills west of Durban, in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa, from which he graduated in 1968. | ||||
| He then enrolled in the civil engineering program at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in Durban, and earned a B.Sc.Eng in Civil Engineering in 1973. While working on his engineering degree, he also worked summers as a survey crew member, engineering student assistant, then as a survey party chief for Owen Jones and Partners, a civil engineering firm in the Durban area, and lastly as a technical assistant for a month at South African Railways. | ||||
